Tormishire demonstration

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

I’ll be demoing Tormishire at the Cube gallery (website here) in Manchester on the 7-9th of June, there will also be unlocked Betas available on CD. Though if anyone wants to come on the private 6th of June event then send me an email and I’ll post you a ticket!

Crazy days ahead.

Tormishire update

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

I did good, I think. Caroline thinks I’m procrastinating on Tormishire by doing the written work to go with it, a sort of useful form of laziness. Either way I’ve managed to write 70 pages worth of video game research, market research, product analysis, branding, design documents all about Tormishire and am currently up to page 28 on my visual literacy essay – in this case it’s the potentially non-fictional packaging for the product.

Well since there are no screenshots to show I might as well talk about the side you guys won’t be seeing for the game! I can almost smell my First.

Also, I just got Pokemon Pearl. Which I suspect will take up a lot of my time now seeing that I’m winding down on the work front. Tormishire is sorta on pause for the time being so don’t expect any fancy new anything for a while. Sorry! Might stick up a piano medley of some random tracks though… I know! But it’s something… :*(

Paul got a BMW!

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

He’ll shoot me for posting this picture, because it’s probably not exact. Lovely machine though. All I know it’s a BMW, black, and says Business on the inside.

Dead man walking

Get this.

I like taking pictures. I’m a hobbyist with my digital SLR camera. Using the standard lens that came with it and about 3 lessons last year. My friends and family know I like to take photographs. It would probably be my friends to first say I’m not a professional, but my family have faith.
And faith makes me nervous.

In 2 days my cousin is putting on a hair and fashion event. With countless models and a catwalk, guess who is to photograph this event? A professional, of course! No! It’s me daddio. I’m totally responsible for the whole photography side of the show! Me! I wouldn’t trust me with a cat!

Still. If you don’t hear from me in 2 days I probably ran to hills hoping to escape my troubles.

Though it is kind of exciting despite the fear… I wonder if this is how masochists feel? Though I did watch some show about a Superstorm and a guy said “Cometh the hour, cometh the man” which was so non-cliched.

A real waterfall

I was all ready to post these photographs oh-so long ago. You can thank my desktop clearing shenanigans that reminded me about these pics, taken up at Blakely reservoir, even think it’s on the Saddleworth Moor. Could be wrong! But it’s close enough to smell the affluence.

Some nonce-sense

Peep Show s4e2 is on in 23 minutes so I feel an urge to not just kill, but abuse time. Lets get some formalities dealt with-

Tormishire is being updated in accordance to viewers comments on the trailer. To be totally honest I wasn’t entirely happy with lots of things in the game but lacked motivation to fix, but since seeing the writing out of my head and on the cold light of forums I’ve decided to do a mass update. Which includes-
* New art style. Pretty much doing the whole thing from scratch. It was noted that the game looks similar to Yoshi’s Island so I’m hitting that one head on. Really should have finished some graphics before that trailer. Infact the whole trailer was so premature and I even forgot to include the proper physics demonstration clips, such a stupid little boy I am.
* Updated movement. It’s a lot more fluid now. Running Lv1 is slower than before and the max of Lv2 is a devastating sprint (for the enemies at least).
* More items. We’re up to about 8 now, but the engine really does support an unlimited number and this will likely be the focus of initial post-release updates.

Pokémon Diamond & Pearl will be out soonish. I haven’t been this excited in a game since Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow. I’m expecting a game I can really throw myself into (and make it count as research for coursework, oh cheating the system, how I love thee).

I have a choice of picking either Design Studies or Design Futures for my degree, since I’m in the final ever year of my current course. Design Futures sounds like Doctor Who taught me, whereas Studies has a certain academic ambience to it.

And I really love my Microsoft/Razer Habu mouse now. If you have £50 spare and you need a mouse then at least take a look at these. They seem shunned from the internet, probably because of the price. But they are superbly comfortable and has even raised me an extra 1k points on the TSGK Half Life 2 servers. Great for precision pixel art, great for huge dual monitor resolutions too. But don’t take my word for it, take the words of Nelson Manuela-

“ah can’t leave without this marse.”

Surprise surprise, chuck!

I wasn’t planning on doing either tonight but-

For the Beta testers
Version 1.6 has been released. New areas, new music, new movement engine, updated physics, optimised blahblah… And another reminder – 1.6 does away with the 2 game save files and 1 options file so you can remove them if you want to keep a tidy little folder.

For the rest
A trailer. The first proper trailer, that still isn’t to the sketches and images in my head but we’re getting closer! The music is from a new area I’m putting the finishing touches into.

Sting!

Oh it’s like Christmas or something. You can always tell when I have a tutorial at uni!

Spent the good part of the morning working on a little 8 second intro for future Tormishire trailers. The original is 1080p but sheesh as if I’ll ever need that! This ones a comfy little SD version.

Click to make it big!

Picture time! I’ve spent the past few days ripping my DVDs for iTunes and fell in love with seeing all my shows displayed on that Album flip view/whatever it’s called. Began planning out how a Tormishire album cover art would look. I just experimented outside of my usual art techniques and style for this one. Unfinished too.
