Alex Adventure

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

This beautiful little game turned up on the Daily Click recently. It’s possibly one of my fave indie platformers because it seems to evoke a very Spectrum style nostalgia. Any one who remembers said system should really download it. Apparently there are 6 objects to collect, I’ve only found 1 so far so I’m not too far in. But it works so well, really fluid engine and great music. I really think it’s a triumph of modern gaming, how it can play so well and still be enjoyable whilst retaining a style and gameplay that is as dated as me.
Micro Computers everywhere should feel proud.

Another picture. It’s got the big statue thing from giant waterfall zone coming out of some kind of foamy nonsense! “Mountains” at the back, winding road, trees. All sorts of things you shouldn’t really get underground!

Music from the Tormishire trailer. Hugely updated too, different instruments etc.
Level 4 theme tune.

Tormishire update

Friday, May 18th, 2007

Not to be mistaken with the megaton news drop coming up in the next few days, for I have smaller news! Well I suppose it’s more “details” than anything else. Lets crack on.

-Tormishire’s world map works unlike any other 2D game map. It will be very noticeable during play (though even the betas don’t show off how different it is yet).
-Chutney is returning in a more complicated and informative role.
-There will be 18 skills in the game. Though because of the way the game plays the player might only see a fraction of them. No route will give the player all skills and items. That would be utter chaos!
-Hasn’t been shown yet, but both the player and Tsol will have levelling up features. The blue thing is called Tsol if I haven’t said already.
-The game now has the player running and walking slower, with the gravity decreased for a little more of a floaty feel. New background and foreground art too. Basically sorting out the legitimate criticism folk had with the 2nd trailer (Which is now up on GameTrailers!).

Testers! Version 1.7 will be out in the next 24 hours.

On a personal note I’ve handed in all my university work. I thought it was a little ironic that the first song my iPod played on Shuffle Song mode was Yoshis Island level complete theme. Elgar’s Nimrod was on next and made Manchester seem a little more beautiful than normal. Soon as my iTunes videos have all converted for my iPod I’ll be back working on Tormishire and bashing out all other stuff. Hello free time! Only to be quashed by the dredging requirement to find a job.

To say I’m not enjoying this is a filthy lie. Now that my work is about to be handed in I’ve been churning out more graphics to bulk out my little mountain of work. Some examples!

Has been printed onto a bit of square card. I’m actually really pleased with the effect this has. Like polaroids or something.

Is a mockup advert art for a magazine or whatever. I made/rushed a few of these but I think they’re pretty smart nonetheless!

Congrats to me

I just ordered myself a graduation gift. Figured I can’t really ask my parents for anything since during my time at college and university they have bought me *ahem*- 2 laptops and a jock off monitor. Went half with me on a PowerBook, iMac and Canon dSLR camera.

My gift? An 80gb iPod. EIGHTY GIGS! Should go nice alongside the 6gb iPod mini and 1gb iPod shuffle. Well, I have worked very hard for the past couple of projects! They wanted design docs around 7k words. I did 15k! They wanted a single piece of design. I made a game.

Anyroad. Enough about that. I’ll have some fairly juicy news regarding Tormishire in the next week. Just sorting out some of the minor details.

Tormishire boxes!

What’s that? Inbetween Ross Noble? It’s both of Tormishire’s concept cases!

I just found that to be the most haunting trailer for Doctor Who yet.

Pokemon Pearl code!

Really enjoying this one. In that Mario Kart DS feels like a “Best of” compilation, as does this for Pokemon. Anyroad, the above is my code. Add me. And win.

Before Tormishire there was…
