2 and a half years later…

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

… Sam will be in another magazine, this time the Ukrainian publications of Domashny PK and Gameplay. I don’t normally announce these but I’m just a bit surprised that all this time later and people still want to play that game. What with Sam also doing the rounds on a number of top 100 indie games lists it makes me hopeful that Tormi is going to be released to a fairly welcoming audience.

/sniff/ cheers guys!

We make good team!

Ok, so I forgot about the lettuce layer and also no olives but it was actually very, very good. Also the cheese was sliced cheddar so it didn’t have them holes in.

And how I love Team Fortress 2.

Items guide

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Just thought I’d go over a few of the more used items in Tormi. The player can use 1 item at a time, selected via the menu, pressing Q or E on the keyboard or using the Xbox 360′s shoulder buttons (either bumper or trigger). There are many items to get in the game, most of them found via subquests.

Torch

Probably the most useful item in Tormishire, the torch lights up the surrounding area which makes it a necessity for unlit caverns.

Oh no! But a quick press of the next item button and…

image

Ta da! But look closely, flies and insects are attracted to any lights. Even your torch! As you move further from a light source the background will start to fade to darkness and the players view will diminish.

But that’s not all the torch does. When approaching a secret area it will switch from a yellow flame to red! So it might be useful to keep the torch on even in well lit areas. And of course it won’t work under water, you’ll have to rely on other light sources there…

Bombs

All self-respecting adventure games need explosives. Tormi has a couple but the first you’ll get (provided you visit a certain thermal power station). They’re fuelled by a certain fruit that’s quite common in one area of the game. Bombs go boom and send enemies and other stuff flying. I posted a video over this way.

Bomb fizzing away.

Bomb seeing off several enemies. Bombs and anything else that triggers an explosion also light up the area for the player, much like the torch only it soon gets dark again.

Radio

The radio lets you listen to Tormi’s own radio station, nothing more than that! Just keep it away from enemies with sensitive ears, the volume dial is stuck on 11. Like most radios it can be thrown around-

Sending sweet sweet music anywhere you want. Just be sure to pick it back up again!

Let’s play Satan Sam

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Ok I was kinda surprised to see this! Some ace chap is doing one of them Youtube video run-throughs of Sam.

And I apologise for making such an evil game. I didn’t know it was that hard, oops!

On reflection I really miss Sam. Tormishire’s so much stricter in terms of level design and graphics. I miss designing little puzzley/actiony levels. I’d love to make a sequel now.

August update

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

I’m taking advantage of the quiet house and working flat out all day on the ol game! Also because it’s doing nothing but rain now. Or at least the sun comes out for a while so you set off for a walk and get caught in another storm, boo hoo.

This is the full world map so far. If I ended up in a coma for a while and Caroline went on my computer to give the world my work, this is what you’d play. It’s about 2-4 hours of gameplay so far, 1hr 30m if you’re speed running it. Right now I’m working on an area to the left of that map and just in blue circle area 1/4 from the right edge. It’s pretty much all of Chapter 1 and has little bits of Chapter 2, there will be 4 or 5 chapters. And a little rough calculating brings the current explorable map size to 50 square miles (going off the main character being 5’10).

Of course the map is going to be hella lot bigger than this. This is about 1/5 of the planned map in Photoshop.

But other than all that nonsense I’ve been nursing a really bad cold. So bad I could barely breath! Which is no good now I’m able to use the gym at any hour of the day or night. Don’t think I’ve posted this yet but I’ve abandoned a little group shot for Tormi – ho hum! Just couldn’t settle on a colouring style.
